Soul Sisters ~ Partners in petty crimes

09:56

"Mmmm...This smells so good Bush" said Sindhu, savoring the sweet scent from her right cheek.
"I love this soap's smell too, now stop taking in too much of it or you'll breathe in the soap foam" I warned my best friend.

"Do you think Aditya Roy Kapoor smells this good too?" She asked out of the blue and all I could do was stare at her for a moment and then we both broke into fits of laughter...
It had been a week since Sindhu, my best friend, had come back from Poona to meet me. Life had turned tough for me since she and her family had shifted to Poona six months ago. I remember that day when I had been to the airport to leave her... nothing had felt right, it was like something was terribly wrong... In Geet's words: "Jaise koyi train choot rahi thi!" ...and when we had finally bid adieu to each other at the airport after raising many a traveller's eyebrows with the scene we created, it was like I had lost a part of myself.
One week back when I got a call from Sindhu informing that she would be dropping by to meet me, my happiness knew no bounds!

"Ok Ok now stop it! Hehe...let's get over with this experiment first" I said as I applied a layer of normal soap on her left cheek.
"Madam! Can you do it fast? I am burning to see what the results are and should I add that this Ribbon thing is irritating too?!" She exclaimed trying to peep out of the cute pink ribbon which I had used to close her eyes.
When I received my Dove hamper from Indiblogger asking me to try the 'guessing game' on my best friend, my first thought was to try it on my sister but then when Sindhu came home to visit me, it wasn't hard to talk her into trying it out - well! Actually she was more excited and enthusiastic than I was!...and today when we were finally trying the experiment, both of us agreed that it was super fun! As we sat in our balcony trying out the brand new Dove soap, nostalgia hit us...this experiment was  similar to the several silly experiments we had tried out when we were young...well - younger...

I was in third standard when this happened. I and Sindhu, my neighbourhood auntie's daughter were already getting along very well and it wasn't long before our parents had gotten friendly too.Once, on the request of Sindhu's mother, Mum had taken both of us to a beauty parlour to give us a boy cut. Ironically, when we reached there, the lady in charge was busy doing something to her customer's eyebrows. Young as we were, we failed to realize that the lady was doing an eyebrow session and thought that something fishy was going on. Finally when the session was over and the beautician proceeded towards giving us haircuts, we stole a glance at the lady who had gone through the eyebrow session, and to our amusement, her face looked more neater and beautiful. Awed by the whole incident guess what we both did when we came back home?! We both actually...i mean for REAL cut off our eyebrows, using  scissors...haha...OMG! How stupid of us! I remember, we both had first locked ourselves up inside my brother's room and had cut off our eyebrows with the help of scissors and the result - we looked like circus clowns! Don't ask me what happened after that! I can still not get over that look on my mother's face when she caught us in the act! Thank God those were summer vacation or there wouldn't have been any stop at the humiliation we would have received at school...

This was just the beginning of our adventures. It was not long before we started giving makeovers to our barbie dolls and trying out make-up ourselves. Our stationary boxes acted as great helpers... We would paint our nails using sketch pens just like we would see those page 5 models doing there nails. When we would get hold of our mothers' long dupattas, we would drape them like saris and have immense fun imitating our school teachers.....and the fun didn't end there! I would poach my sister's stilettos from her cupboard and Sindhu and me would enjoy the whole evening walking in those high heels in our balconies, imitating the models in MTV fashion shows. The summer afternoons would never be complete without the both of us joining a couple of other friends and discussing beauty tips. I remember the first time we had applied lipstick...hehe! Both of us had ended up applying my sister's red lipstick all over our faces.

There was no stop to our mischief even when we became a bit mature. I recall the most grave incident which occurred on my school's farewell day. While for others it was a heartfelt, thanksgiving sad parting, for us, it was a day when we had the permission to dress like princesses!
Hair straighteners had become very common among youngsters but not that our parents allowed it yet! Straightening our hair was equal to committing a crime in the view of our mothers so you can imagine how disappointed we self obsessed besties were when we weren't allowed to straighten our hair even on our school farewell party!
Did we give up? eh! You think so? Then you are wrong! *winks* I think that was when Sindhu and I did the most unthinkable thing ever...We straightened our hair using an iron box - oh yes we did!

They say the joy of first love is truly divine....how true was this in our case! Except for the fact that our first love wasn't a boy....it was make up! The fun we would have while dressing up for school was inevitable.
Books ready or not, high ponies were a must, every time there was a school trip, the planning would start three weeks prior to the outing. All our mini make up kits including a lip-gloss, night cream, day cream sunscreen and God knows what all would be secretly included in our backpacks.

In my college days, the joy of having a best friend just increased. This was the time when the limits to our freedoms were extended... but sadly, Sindhu's Mum still didn't allow her to have a haircut. Both Sindhu and I had long beautiful hair which would reach our waists. While I loved my long hair, Sindhu hated her's. She kept ranting that she desperately needed a funky haircut but her mother wouldn't allow her to cut her hair.

Talk about what girls can get up to if they don't get what they desire! Both of us cooked up a plan and stuck a chewing gum on Sindhu's hair. Teary, when she came home complaining about some brute who stuck a chewing gum in her hair at college, all her Mum could do to console her was to get her hair cut and give a nice hearing to the college principle about misbehaving students. haha... :P  Well...we really didn't know it would grow that grave but it was totally worth it! The principle was our long time dushman! I really hope Swapna aunty is not reading this... :D

I have had the biggest adventures of my life during my high school. It is such a lovely feeling to be in your early teens! You wouldn't imagine the mischief  me and my friends would get to when we had a spare class. The guys would get their cell phones to school(OK this is an inside secret) and when we would have a grace hour, the whole lot of us would have fun calling unknown people and irritating them...haha! OK, now I know that was wrong but kya karen *dil toh baccha hai na* Getting numbers was easy peasy. An unregistered Sim card would be used to commit all these crimes. Sindhu and I would call book stores(the numbers would be taken from the back of our notebooks) and we would end up placing large book orders, enjoying the whole process. When the vendor would ask for the delivery address, we would cut the call... *naughty girls*

"I bet you applied Dove Soap on my right cheek!" exclaimed Sindhu. Her voice brought me out of my reverie.
"and how did you guess that Sindh?" I asked her cheekily.
"Well, my right cheek is more smoother, softer and damn! It smells so good!" she said, giving me her best smile, feeling her cheeks...
"You are absolutely right Senorita!" I said hugging her.
"Aww! Thank you so much Querida!" Said Sindhu kissing my cheek... "Haha..imagine what my fiance would say if he touched my right cheek? Lol! Totally lattoo hojayega..."she giggled taking me by surprise.

"WHAT! Seriously! You are engaged?!! How could you not tell me..." and the whole house vibrated as the two best friends started their petty fight...

Oh! It's so lovely to have a best friend!
